A myopic immigration reform
Article Abstract:
Both the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 and the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 need to be repealed as they will not be able to prevent illegal immigration and only serve to punish legal immigrants and refugees. While politicians and mass media depict immigrants as freeloaders who bilk US taxpayers of hard-earned money, most of them are actually at jobs that require long hours but pay little. Contrary to popular portrayals, they contribute to state and federal revenue while getting minimal public aid.

The two-sided story of immigration
Article Abstract:
The 105th Congress enacted laws that reinstated the rights of immigrants which were withdrawn by the previous congress. This move was interpreted as part of the growing support for immigrants among the legislators. However, much is left to be undone when it comes to immigrant rights and welfare. For the record, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 legalized the detention and deportation of noncitizen immigrants for crimes committed. Unless laws such as these are eradicated, the US advocacy of human rights will remain empty and hypocritical.

The moral dimension in the immigration debate
Article Abstract:
The Illegal Immigration Reform and the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Acts of 1996 contain provisions which pose moral issues and adversely affect immigrants. The laws stress that immigrants who illegally lived in the US can be banned from reentering the country even though they have already applied for suspension of deportation. Consequently, these immigrants will be forced to leave their relatives who already achieved US citizenship.
