A placebo controlled randomized trial of the effects of phenylpropanolamine and nicotine gum on cessation rates and postcessation weight gain in women
Article Abstract:
The study assessed the efficacy of two forms of pharmacotherapy, namely nicotine and phenylpropanolamine gums, and a 13-week cognitive behavioral smoking cessation program targeted for women. The results indicated that the pharmacological interventions had no effect on cessation rates and postcessation weight gain, but the behavioral component of the intervention was effective in increasing the odds of quitting smoking in weight-concerned women.

Is smoking associated with lower body mass in adolescents?: A large-scale biracial investigation
Article Abstract:
There is a widespread belief in adolescence that smoking controls body weight. An investigation was undertaken to examine the link between body mass index (BMI) and smoking status in a large group of adolescent smokers and nonsmokers. Results showed that smoking was positively linked to BMI, as increased levels of smoking exposure led to an increase in BMI. It seems that smoking is not linked to lowered BMI in adolescent groups.
