A prospective evaluation of the relationship between reasons for drinking and DSM-IV alcohol-use disorders
Article Abstract:
A link between self-reported reasons for drinking and alcohol consumption have previously been reported. A study has been undertaken into the link between reasons for drinking and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed). Results showed a significant link between reasons for drinking and follow-up diagnostic classification. At follow-up, drinking to reduce negative affect predicted DSM-IV alcohol dependence. There was no link established between the motive of drinking for positive following enhancement and the follow-up DSM-IV alcohol use disorder.

The inventory of drinking situations (IDS) in current drinkers with different degrees of alcohol problems
Article Abstract:
Data from current drinkers who had been previously tested, was examined to show the construct validity of the Inventory of Drinking Situations (IDS). The psychometric properties reflected in the IDS data showed good reliability, appropriate item-total correlations, and acceptable item difficulty. The data indicates different motivations to drink in individuals with increasing alcohol problems, indicating that there are multiple mechanism of drug motivation.
