A quantitative history of comparative stratification research
Article Abstract:
Peter Blau and Otis Duncan used a particular style of comparative theorizing in 'The American OccupationalStructure' which had the unintended effect of eliminating all forms of comparative analysis. It is believed that Blau and Duncan did not consider the effects of extra-individual forces on occupational attainment, however, analysis shows that they chose comparative approaches treated analytical units as relatively autonomous. This is in contrast to the method of new structuralists who based their comparisons jon smaller subunits that are mutually dependent.

The new structuralism
Article Abstract:
Peter Blau and Otis Duncan recorded an occupational structure with upward mobility in 'The American Occuoational Structure.' The system can be defined by its wholeness, laws of transformation and self-regulation. However, the movement of the US economy towards an open international system as well as the interaction of labor-marketinstitutions is changing traditional American views about occupations. A new occupational order is emerging which must be understood through the study of long-run structural changes.

'The American Occupational Structure' and structural equation modeling in socilogy
Article Abstract:
Peter Blau and Otis Duncanchanged the elements of the field of stratification through path analysis in their book 'The American Occupational Structure' (AOS). Structtural equation modeling spread to other areas and fundamentally changing them in the process due to the conducive situations that made AOS a success. However, this has led to the to the pervasive use of unsophisticated causalism in much of contemporary sociology.
