Almost a half century of political sociology: trends in the United States
Article Abstract:
US political sociology is still a popular field of study, but it is less central to sociological research than it was during its 1960s boom period. Initially, the discipline had a behaviorist orientation and studies focused on the nature of democracy. The social upheaval of the 1960s led to increased research on protest movements and growing dissatisfaction with the behaviorist model. Political sociology in the 1970s emphasized historical explanations for current trends and a renewed interest in the Marxist perspective. The state and other social institutions are the focus of current research.

Emerging political sociology in Russia and Russian transformation
Article Abstract:
Russian political sociology has only existed since the perestroika period. Prior to the late 1980s, the Soviet state exercised rigid ideological control over the social sciences, preempting any meaningful research. Political sociology since perestroika has concentrated on topics corresponding to the transformational experiences of Russia since 1985. Most studies have dealt with social movements, protest actions, political parties, electoral behavior and political leadership. Russian political sociologists tend to be ideological and directly involved in the political process.
