Aberrant cities: urban population loss in the United States, 1820-1930
Article Abstract:
The great depression of the 1930s caused a mass exodus of people from many industrial centers around the United States especially cities like Newport, Rhode Island and Alexandria, Virginia. A study was conducted, using census data, to find the reasons why some cities saw a mass exodus whilst others did not and it was found that shift from trade to manufacturing and the impact of reconstruction were the two reasons.
