Biographical research in former West Germany
Article Abstract:
Several factors in the former West Germany delayed the rediscovery of biographical research, despite the availability of facilities. The specificity of German biographical research emanates from developments in literary history and philosophical reflection on the autobiographical genre. German research has lately opened to conceptualization and has turned from biography as sociological method to biographical research. German sociologists have started interacting with their European counterparts.

Recognition through pleasure, recognition through violence: gendered coloured subjectivities in South Africa
Article Abstract:
The formation of coloured identity in South Africa is discussed, based on one woman's life history. Topics include power in the research process, 'coloured' identity in relation to racialized and gendered violence, moments of recognition between researcher and informant, and opening old wounds in the interview process.
