Career moves: reflections on the Irish gunman
Article Abstract:
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) gunman is not a wicked criminal or vicious psychopath as the British government would have the public believe. Volunteers from the six counties of Northern Ireland are generally young working-class men. They are high school dropouts, Catholic, have Republicans in their families, and do not have any current employment prospects in a trade. They do not have technical or professional skills, but they are well acquainted with the area and bright and eager to learn. The best gunmen combine skill at their craft with intelligence and willingness to sacrifice for the cause.
