Caregiver burden at McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center
Article Abstract:
The McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center designed a respite care program to alleviate the stress suffered by elderly caregivers. An experiment was conducted to examine the validity of the program. The experimental group consisting of 16 caregivers experienced respite care while the control group of 14 caregivers did not. The effect of the veterans' Activities of Daily Living impairment, memory, and behavior problems on caregiver burden was determined. Statistical analyses showed respite care positively affected caregiver burden associated with memory and behavior problems.

The elderly: their perceived supports and reciprocal behaviors
Article Abstract:
A study on the coping ability with stress of 520 senior citizens over 70 years of age between Sep 1987 to Jun 1988 was made in Vancouver, Canada. The elderly, their family, friends and caregivers were interviewed. The answers to questions on Personal Care Needs, Instrumental Needs and Expressive Needs were statistically analyzed. There were significant differences on the three categories with relation to sex and civil status. The trend on reciprocal behavior was determined by asking who the elderly confided in in times of need and vice versa.

Development of University of Wisconsin Family Assessment Caregiver Scale (UW-FACS): a new measure to assess families caring for a frail elderly member
Article Abstract:
The role of family caregiving for elderly members was evaluated and five parameters were distinguished: validation, family of origin, problem solving, roles and boundaries. The effectiviness of the UW-FACS, a 21-item scale for assessing the family caregiving system, was determined by using it on 83 family caregivers. The validity test revealed significant correspondence with the scale, global clinical ratings of the family role, family burden and mental state of the caregiver.
