Characteristics of smokeless tobacco users seeking treatment
Article Abstract:
The situations most frequently endorsed for use of smokeless tobacco (ST) are similar to those seen for cigarette smokers, according to research investigating the characteristics of ST users who were enrolled in a ST cessation programme. The population of ST treatment seekers obtained from a US mid-west metropolitan area was generally young, White males with some college education. ST users tend to benefit from extensive social support to quit, and this should be exploited in treatment. An important finding is that a large number of ST users currently smoke cigarettes or have smoked in the past.

Measuring dependence in smokeless tobacco users
Article Abstract:
A study investigated the relationship between a criteria variable, cotinine variable and two modified versions of the Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire find a way to measure dependence among smokeless tobacco users. The sample consisted of 100 smokeless tobacco users including three women in the age group of 32 plus or minus 10.5 years. Using smokeless tobacco within half hour of waking was used as a predictor, and studies of smokeless tobacco dependance should probably include saliva cotinine levels as a marker.

Eating behavior and weight control among women using smokeless tobacco, cigarettes, and normal controls
Article Abstract:
A comparative study indicates that weight loss or dietary considerations may not be a motivation for use of smokeless tobacco among women. Only 16.6% of the women using smokeless tobacco in the study mentioned weight loss as a consideration as opposed to 45% of women using cigarettes. The impact of tobacco usage on actual diet restraint was not found to be significant. There should be further study of a larger sample group to understand women's patterns of usage of smokeless tobacco.
