Clinical practice guidelines: should social work develop them?
Article Abstract:
The necessity for social work guidelines to support both the practice and advocacy missions of the profession is discussed. Such guidelines must address the many roles social workers fill with clients and their families and reflect interdisciplinary practice. Resistance to change and inadequate funding must also be confronted.

Good intentions are not enough: practice guidelines for social work
Article Abstract:
Documents putting forth practice guidelines are unlikely to be read by social workers and the guidelines may not be readily usable. Moreover, nonscientific considerations govern many practice decisions and the social work knowledge base of the guidelines is thin.

Evidence is analyzed suggesting that clinical social work guidelines guarantee positive client outcomes, help organize empirical knowledge about what works with certain client problems and that implementation translates into greater client compliance.
