Co-occurrence of alcohol, smokeless tobacco, cigarette, and illicit drug use by lower ranking military personnel
Article Abstract:
Lower-ranking military personnel who reported that they used illicit drugs in 1992 and 1995 Worldwide Survey of Health Related Behaviors tended also to indicate the use of alcohol, smokeless tobacco and cigarettes. Patterns of substance use among lower-ranking military personnel are markedly different from those of civilians of similar age, but substance use behaviours often co-occur in both groups. Quite a high proportion of military troops who drink heavily may also use illicit drugs, and it may thus be appropriate to include interventions for illicit drug use in alcohol-treatment programmes.

Adult smokeless tobacco use and age of onset
Article Abstract:
A study of 345 adults currently using smokeless tobacco varieties (SLT)suggests that the majority of SLT users begin using SLT products in adulthood rather than in the preadolescent period. The relationship between tobacco chewing and the age of onset shows some minor variations. But a trend is established between snuff and the age of onset with substantial users having adult onset. Thus, the relationship between SLT and onset is curvilinear and varies with the subtype.
