Among the elements of the construction of ethnic identity are contact with the other and its establishment as a multifaceted flow which is subject to different negotiations in accordance with the interactive context. Identity and competence: The use of culture in the interpretation of sexual images
Article Abstract:
Cultural sociology tends to ignore the role of identities in interpretation, and it is argued that both identities and competencies influence interpretation. An analysis of how a group of 307 undergraduate students interpreted the photograph of an individual masturbating is presented, and the findings suggest that a simple aggregation of variation in interpretations does not always generate culture war, but active intervention on the part of politicized actors might be needed to produce cultural polarization.
