Death brokering: constructing culturally appropriate deaths
Article Abstract:
Medical experts offer flexible cultural background to death for making end-of-life socially meaningful. Such activities of medical authorities are called death brokering. They help in creating ambiguity about death, which is the very thing they set out to resolve. In process, a need for more expert death brokering becomes essential.

The article examines the growing importance of the family in the physician-patient relationship, illustrated by women's narratives in seeking genetic risk counseling for ovarian and breast cancer in the United Kingdom. Heuristics used by women in risk evaluation included availability, representativeness, and illusion of control.
