Distinguishing sources of cooperation in the one-round prisoner's dilemma: evidence for cooperative decisions based on the illusion of control
Article Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to investigate sources of cooperation in mixed-motive conflicts between people working together as interdependent parties. The aim of the research was to delineate two decision norms or heuristics that lead people to cooperate in single round, mixed motive conflicts such as the prisoner's dilemma game. Results suggest that sometimes cooperate in an illusory attempt to control or influence their counterpart's decision.
