Effect of three smoking cessation treatments on nicotine withdrawal in 141 abstinent alcoholic smokers
Article Abstract:
An assessment of nicotine withdrawal symptoms in abstinent alcoholic smokers indicates that neither type of behavioural smoking treatment nor amount of smoking reduction affected increases in withdrawal. Participants were allocated to standard treatment, behavioural counselling plus exercise or behavioural counselling plus nicotine gum groups. Subjects in standard treatment were told to reduce their cigarette intake over a period that was half as long as those in the behavioural counselling group, but all three groups indicated similar overall reductions in smoking rate.

Predictors of 6-month tobacco abstinence among 1224 cigarette smokers treated for nicotine dependence
Article Abstract:
Research identified five variables that are multivariately linked to tobacco abstinence in smokers undergoing smoking cessation treatment. These are male gender, higher stage of change, lack of psychiatric diagnosis, longest duration of prior stints of tobacco abstinence, and a score of five or below on the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence.
