"Elizabeth Hurley is more than a model": Stars and career diversification in contemporary media
Article Abstract:
Elizabeth Hurley, a successful model and actress, represents a very culturally significant trend within the media industry, namely the increasing development and frequency of 'stars' to diversify into many roles across a range of media. Her career is analyzed to discuss that successful stars actively engage in horizontal and vertical diversification by capitalizing on their star status, the nature of the diversification evolving into a fragmented and flexible process that reflects the forces of synergism.

Antiques, auctions, and action: Interpreting and creating economic value
Article Abstract:
A research is conducted to examine the symbolic interaction of a meager segment of society and although antique auctions are not a vital institution in society, they are critical for participants whose lives and identities are framed by its activities. It reveals some of the intricacies of role-playing at auctions and demonstrates that social structures and human behavior can be understood better when naturalistic research renders 'choate the inchoate emotions and experiences of humans'.

Practicing Oprah; or, the prescriptive compulsion of a spiritual capitalism
Article Abstract:
The Oprah Winfrey Show, O, The Oprah Magazine and The Oprah Book Club combine spiritual counsel with practical encouragement, and inner awakening with capitalist pragmatism. The programming of Oprah Winfrey's shows is analyzed taking the 'practice' of capitalism as the basis, acknowledging that it is unaffiliated with any explicit theology, institution or explicit ritual enactment, although she advocates meditation, prayer and awakening of spirit through her various activities.
