Emory Bogardus and the origins of the social distance scale
Article Abstract:
A history of sociology is provided by focusing on the origins of the Bogardus Social Distance Scale which was developed by Emory Bogardus to measure prejudice or the attitudes toward a variety of groups. Primary and secondary data, an interview with one of Bogardus's colleagues and the Bogardus archive is used to study the circumstances in which Bogardus created this scale.

The article focuses on comparative work on national sociologies which has a high level of generality and the author calls for a pragmatic approach to sources in an engagement with historical resources. A range of data sources are discussed and insights on substantive issues with methodological consequences are offered.
