Political sociology in Britain: survey of the literature and the profession
Article Abstract:
British political sociology as a discipline has declined sharply from its boom period in the early 1970s. The Conservative government, in power since 1979, has spurred staff and research cutbacks in higher education, especially in the social sciences. The growing number of female sociology students, who want more gender-related classes, and increased demand for vocationally practical courses have also led universities to deemphasize their political offerings. Despite these limiting factors, publication of political sociology research has been healthy and this is an encouraging sign.
