Foster parents for persons with mental retardation in Israel: motivation, role perception and their view of the foster person
Article Abstract:
Foster parents take on mentally retarded foster children because they are gratified by the childrens' advancements while in their care. The level of retardation bears no relation to the affective relationship, though. Strong attachment is as likely between parents and severely retarded children. A survey of 130 Israeli foster mothers of mentally retarded persons validates these conclusions. The survey focuses on crucial concepts of foster parent motivation, role perception and role evaluation. The findings have significance in the framing of social policy and practice.

Support groups as 'shock absorbers' in periods of transition: a case study of groups for parents of soldiers in Israel
Article Abstract:
Support groups are groups of people created by social work for easing emotional problems among people caught in situations of crisis and transition. In Israel, support groups play a critical role in a society that is undergoing a phase of transition from a state of survival and war to security and peace. Families with sons and daughters on active service in the Israeli Defense Froces (IDF) depend much on support groups to alleviate feelings of lethargy and anxiety.

Children in foster care: their present situation and plans for their future
Article Abstract:
The number of children under foster care in the US is increasing and foster care has been lauded as a way of promoting child welfare. A study is conducted on the present condition of children in foster care in Israel and on the plans being made to improve their future. Foster care children showed low incidences of conduct problems or problems related to physical or sexual development, but did have high rates of academic problems and low self-esteem.
