Gynecologists, power and sexuality in modernist texts
Article Abstract:
Physicians are often depicted in modernist works. Such characters represent the cultural anxiety prevalent in the post-Victorian Age, where the struggle for control and women's medicine were dominant topics of discussion. Male gynecologists are depicted as an authority in understanding women's vulnerability and complex issues of sexuality. In Ernest Hemingway's fiction, for instance, the physician's control over the female body and the performative nature of masculinity are explored.

Analysis of late 19th- and early 20th-century American drama reveals the evolution in the idea of an ideal physician. These plays depicted physicians as knaves, working for monetary and business intents, or as inefficient doctors. The plays reflect the American perception which allowed physicians to be proficient in finances but prohibited than from focussing on them or allowing financial intents to dictate their practice.
