High-risk alcohol and drug use situations among seriously mentally ill inpatients: a preliminary investigation
Article Abstract:
Subjects from the acute treatment service of a state psychiatric hospital were studied to determine indicators of alcohol and drug use among mentally ill patients. The results showed negligible difference between the drug and alcohol groups with respect to the frequency of high-risk situations for substance use. Moreover, both groups felt the need to use substances when anxious or depressed rather than when they have symptoms of psychosis.
