Identificational assimilation of Japanese-Americans: a reassessment of primordialism and circumstantialism

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the social networks developed in the childhood and adult stages of a third-generation Japanese American exert significant influence over their assimilation into the American society. There is also evidence that either the third or fourth generation will revert to their Japanese heritage. The 1989 study of the Nisei and Sansei generations of Japanese Americans in Portland, OR, further indicated that neither primordialism nor circumstantialism can independently account for the generational assimilation of the ethnic group.

A study on Mexican American youth to examine generational differences in adolescent drinking behaviors is conducted. Results reveal that more recent immigrants were more likely to drink less or overindulge in drink.

Toward a population health model of segmented assimilation: the case of low birth weight in Los Angeles

Article Abstract:

A study applying the segmented assimilation theory to a model of population health to examine birth weight of data from Los Angeles County is conducted. Results indicate an immigrant advantage at individual level.
