Questions raised concerning sociology in the 21st century concern divisions in the social sciences, criteria for examining society, research trends, universality within cultural differences, and training of sociologists.

An example of the ecological redesign of post-mining areas in Germany is used to explore the dynamic relations among concepts such as ignorance, non-knowledge and negative knowledge, which are used to denote the knowledge about the unknown.
