Jealousy and parenting: predicting emotions from identity theory
Article Abstract:
Shared parenting practices have not had as much widespread acceptance as had been expected by its advocates. This restraint, however, might not be strictly due to societal inflexibility concerning gender roles. It is possible that the practice has been checked by mothers' emotional response to father-child relationships. For mothers who deem motherhood as their most esteemed role, the fathers' sharing of their responsibility may be regarded as a threat to their social significance. The degree of jealousy felt by mothers correlates with the emotional stake they have in that role.
