Macroeconomic policy and methodological misdirection in the U.S. National Income and Product Accounts
Article Abstract:
The performance of the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA) from 1986 through 1991 is reviewed to analyze its misdirection of macroeconomic policies. The economic slump in the late 1980s through the early 1990s gave rise to economic, social and political problems. Policy makers had a hard time dealing with the problems due to erroneous economic data from the NIPA. This is due to the unwillingness of Congress and successive administrations to adequately fund statistical programs. Economists and policy makers are thus unable to correctly forecast future economic events.

Using the Survey of Income and Program Participation in disability research and policy
Article Abstract:
Estimated measures of disability provided by the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) are mixed in quality and reliability. Questions regarding severity of work disability and underlying functional limitations should be added to the survey. Measurement of change in disabilities requires some core questions be repeated over time. SIPP underestimates childrens' enrollment in special education programs and fails to record enrollment in Supplemental Security Income programs.

Using the Survey of Income and Program Participation to understand poverty and economic need
Article Abstract:
The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) provides a wide range of in-depth information concerning social and economic circumstances of the low-income population. Monthly accounting periods and SIPP's longitudinal scope allow transitional as well as snap-shot group comparisons. A longer period during which the sample is tracked and a larger low-income sample would increase the validity of poverty research based on SIPP data.
