Microenterprise as an exit route from poverty: recommendations for programs and policy makers
Article Abstract:
Microenterprise programs targeted to low-income groups are only effective if targeted people have the skills and motivation to succeed. Motivation, hard work, and funding will not guarantee success. A study of successful entrepreneurs reveals that owners must be highly educated, knowledgeable about the markets, possess a strong support network, and compete in businesses that are traditionally profitable. Microenterprise programs should offer training when needed, focus on skilled applicants, and place less emphasis on applicants who do not have the talents and resources to succeed.

Article Abstract:
A comparison is made between the start-up financing patterns of black-owned small business enterprises and those of white-owned small businesses. An analysis of financial institution lending to both groups indicate that black entrepreneurs receive smaller loans and that they are more dependent on forms of consumer credit. Research findings suggest the race discrimination in financial institution lending hinder the development of black-owned business enterprises.
