The new labor movement: possibilities and limits
Article Abstract:
The election of John J. Sweeney as president of the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations) in October 1995 has inspired a new generation of bold and militant union leaders. The Labor movement is expected to receive a new burst of support, based on the great response to a 'teach-in' held at Columbia University on the labor movement and also the significant support of the Teamsters' strike of 1997 against United Parcel Service.

Article Abstract:
A sociologist can contribute a variety of facets to a labor union, including academic and non-academic connections, 'sociological imagination' perception, and also the ability to gain access to a given industry in order to report back to a union. 'Labor Research Review' is one of several publications on the 'new' labor movement and 'social movement unionism'. Other publications include: 'Organizing to Win' and 'Workers in a Lean World'.
