Motivational interviewing: research, practice, and puzzles
Article Abstract:
Motivational interviewing has been found to be effective in reducing alcohol and drug abuse. It is a client-centered counseling technique for initiating behavior change through helping clients overcome their ambivalence and inciting them to make decisions. Unlike the stereotypic notion of addiction treatment where the therapist is a powerful expert and the client is a passive actor, motivational interviewing promotes a partnership or companionship and recognizes the client's personal responsibility and freedom of choice.

Factor structure and concurrent validity of the drug use screening inventory in a community adolescent sample
Article Abstract:
The Drug Use Screening Inventory (DUSI) was developed for a clinical setting to aid practitioners in identifying who exhibit problematic alcohol and drug use and to evaluate their associated physical and mental health status as well as their psychological adjustment to family, school and work. The resulting set of six subscales shows adequate internal consistency and provides an easily interpretable research tool for investigating etiological relationships between substance use problems and other risk behaviors.
