Multidimensional subtypes and treatment outcome in first-time DWI offenders
Article Abstract:
A two-cluster solution has been identified as optimal for defining clearly distinguished subtypes of driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) offenders. It was found that Type A individuals were characterized by an older age of onset, less family history of substance abuse, less alcohol severity and lower antisociality, anxiety and depression. Type B individuals showed an earlier onset and higher scores on the other subtyping dimensions. This research provided further evidence for the generalizability of the Type A/B alcoholism distinction in a sample which was extremely heterogeneous in relation to level of alcohol involvement. There was no evidence for patient-treatment matching for any of the outcome variables.

Self-efficacy and motivation for controlling drinking and drinking/driving: an investigation of changes across a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) intervention program and of recidivism prediction
Article Abstract:
It appears that most Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenders both recognize problems with drinking and drinking/driving and are seeking to take steps to change drinking and driving behaviours from the very start of a DUI intervention programme. This research assessed changes in motivational stage scores and self-efficacy stores between the start and end of a four-week court-mandated intervention. Links between recidivism, stage classification and scores on stage-of-change and self-efficacy scales were assessed. DUI offenders were generally classified into the same stage for both drinking and for drinking/driving, remaining at the same stage from pre-test to post-test.

Manualized treatment for substance abusers with personality disorders: dual focus schema therapy
Article Abstract:
The Dual Focus Schema Therapy (DFST) for substance abusers with personality disorders is analyzed. The DFST is conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the therapist integrates early relapse prevention work with the identification and education about early maladaptive schemas and coping styles and their correlation with substance abuse. The second stage involves changing the maladaptive schemas and coping styles that influence personality and substance abuse problems.
