Ready to work: LHA resident entrepreneurs
Article Abstract:
A growing number of public housing residents are responding to the government's call for self-sufficiency not only by finding employment for themselves but by starting their own businesses and employing their fellow residents. Two such residents are Shirley Hammond and Lester Coleman of Chicago, both recipients of the National Assn of Housing and Redevelopment Officials' Self-Sufficiency Award. Hammond started a janitorial service that currently employs 72 residents while Coleman's company, which refurbishes household appliances, employs 20 people. The two have teamed up to establish the consulting firm Resident Entrepreneurship Program or REP Inc. The company provides assistance to public housing residents who want to become entrepreneurs.
