New initiative revitalizes Bridgeport
Article Abstract:
The Bridgeport Housing Authority (BHA) is implementing several programs to revitalize many decaying neighborhoods in Bridgeport, CT. The city was once a thriving manufacturing center and had built plenty of housing units for its factory workers. The houses, including those in housing developments, began to deteriorate when jobs began disappearing in the 1960s. BHA is now trying to buy and redevelop abandoned housing all over Bridgeport with federal financial assistance. It has already completed the renovation of a number of single-family homes in three different parts of the city. Its next project is the construction of new housing units to replace the Father Panik Village, Bridgeport's older public development. The housing authority is working with other groups to achieve its goals.

Community cooperation turns old houses into new dreams
Article Abstract:
The city of Colorado Springs, CO, successfully transformed old houses into affordable homes through the help of the whole community. The project involved the relocation of 10 abandoned houses to a discarded parcel of land and the renovation of the homes before being sold to qualified low-income to moderate-income first-time home buyers. Residents from the vicinity, city and utilities departments, local lenders, neighborhood associations, private business owners, nonprofit groups, and federal and stage agencies all chipped in to the initiative. The resulting home ownership community, which is now considered home to the lucky families who now live there, has been warmly welcomed by the neighboring community.
