New perspectives on the manipulation of opiate urges and the assessment of cognitive effort associated with opiate urges
Article Abstract:
A cognitive model of drug urges assumes that urges represent the operation of cognitively demanding processes devoted to supporting or blocking the automatized drug-sue behavior. The effects of verbal drug cues and mood induction on self-report opiate urges were assessed in opiate addicts. Negative affect was not linked to nonautomatic processing, but drug urges could be activated by drug cues.

Variables modulating stress and coping that discriminate drug consumers from low or nondrug consumers
Article Abstract:
The way in which certain stress and coping variables relate to drug use was assessed in 85 men and 39 women, divided into consumers and low or nonconsumers. Results suggested that consumers exhibited significantly lower scores in self-control than low or nonconsumers. It may be important to consider such variables when planning prevention programs.
