Normal anogenital anatomy
Article Abstract:
A panel discussion concerning research in normal anogenital anatomy in relation to child sexual abuse investigation is presented. Distinction between accidental injuries and injuries resulting from the abuse must be accurate. The evidence of abuse is important in court proceedings and probability data must be avoided. Inter-observer reliability is also a problem in relation to the evidence evaluation. In relation to research funding, the NIH formed a working group on child research and neglect consisting of representatives willing to sponsor research in the anatomy.

Normal anogenital anatomy in children: commentary
Article Abstract:
The research regarding the normal anogenital anatomy in relation to child sexual abuse is significant since it is the primary basis for evidence documentation of the offense. Since medical examiners are asked to perform the physical examinations, they must be competently knowledgeable in distinguishing the appearance of the anatomy of both abused and non-abused children. Barriers of the research are attributed to difficulties in studies of non-abused populations and inadequate funding source.

Normal anogenital anatomy
Article Abstract:
Medical practitioners must be competently knowledgeable regarding the normal anogenital anatomy when required to investigate a case involving child sexual abuse. This is because they need to distinguish it from an injured one and to verify the account of the victim. Extensive knowledge on the anatomy of the hymen and surrounding tissues is needed in medical examination. However, anatomical variations related to race must be also considered.
