Personality disorders predict relapse in alcoholic patients
Article Abstract:
The effects of AXIS II comorbidity in alcoholics on the probability of relapse following treatment are studied. Results show that patients with AXIS II comorbidity had increased probability of relapse after three months compared to those without AXIS II comorbidity. The motivation for change and time in programs also modified the impact of AXIS II on relapse. AXIS II comorbidity predicted relapse in individuals that were less motivated or spent less than four months in programs.

Article Abstract:
The comorbidity of substance use disorders with mood, anxiety, conduct and antisocial personality disorders is studied using the resources of the International Consortium in Psychiatric Epidemiology. Results show a strong correlation between psychiatric disorders and substance abuse. A continuum in the magnitude of comorbidity as a function of the spectrum of substance and a link between the number of comorbid disoders and substance abuse severity were also observed.

Alcohol dependence and mood disorders
Article Abstract:
The correlations between alcohol abuse and mood disorders are analyzed. Results show a significant link between bipolar manic-depressive diseases and alcohol abuse. The time-line approach was effective in pinpointing temporary substance-induced conditions while induced and independent depression in alcoholics were found to be separate illnesses. It was also observed that psychiatric symptoms were not aggravated by substance abuse.
