The experiences of an individual in China who took part in the student demonstration of 1989 but was not a student, are described, focusing on how that person defined a certain class of rioters and dissidents. Topics include the political context of the 1989 demonstrations, oppositional social groups, social control methods, and the individual's encounters with Chinese soldiers.
