An article by M. Dear and S. Flusty on 'postmodern urbanism' is discussed in relation to the notion of a radical change in the development of cities. The lack of an ethnographic dimension in the 'postmodern urbanism' of M. Dear and S. Flusty is discussed. The Los Angeles school of Dear and Flusty is compared to the Chicago school, which successfully combined ecological and ethnographic perspectives.
