Tolerance in a rigorous science
Article Abstract:
Staddon and Higa's research on the timing intervals in animals will stimulate further research on the subject and on other related topics such as memory dynamics. They should be lauded for their excellent historical analysis of the scalar expectancy theory. Their position is similar with that of Skinner who argued that history has to be considered for behavior to be understood. However, other researchers may view their multiple-time-scale model as being too simple while others may see it as not being simple enough.

The whirlgig of time: some thoughts on Staddon and Higa
Article Abstract:
A critique on Staddon and Higa's research on timing intervals in animals is presented. Both have developed a new model for timing intervals called the multiple-time-scale model based on an RC circuit called an integrator. Their model functions based on the 'memory-as-stimulus' principle whereby salient events produce a transient state in the organism that varies with time. Hence, their model encounters the same problems experienced by its alternatives as far as how states, traces and counts become behavior.
