Postmodernism, protest, and the new social movements
Article Abstract:
Postmodern politics is not, as are other schools of thought, based on a plan for a better society and a philosophy about the relationship between the individual and the state. Rather, postmodernism defines itself negatively by speaking out against state institutions but not providing a vision of what postmodernism favors. Postmodernism's belief in political discourse coupled with a lack of a grand plan the discourse is supposed to lead to can produce a status-quo politics. Postmodernists need to start with a vision of what they want the world to become in order to challenge liberal capitalism well.

Article Abstract:
One view of a politics of change is the necessity of basing social change on economic and political theories. Postmodernism's leitmotifs of deconstruction and subversion are inadequate to this approach, which requires structural analysis and group action. Pragmatism is willing to use both theory and collective action and is thus a better engine for social change.
