Poverty and the environment: an international perspective for social work
Article Abstract:
Data shows a clear link between poverty and environmental degradation caused by unfair international trade practices. Industrialized nations, through toxic waste trade, have worsened the poverty-stricken conditions of undeveloped countries. International social service must intervene to stop such practices at the local, national and international levels. Intervention strategies would include educating the poor on the health hazards of toxic waste, working for more public participation and lobbying for laws and policies against the exportation of toxic waste by industrialized nations.

Regarding heroin: British and American approaches
Article Abstract:
The differences in handling substance abuse between the British and the Americans were analyzed in terms of their respective approaches. The American approach emphasizes abstinence and punishment while the British highlights harm education. The harm reduction approach is directed toward early treatment of drug users by monitoring their lifestyle and drug use. In addition, it advocates community prevention work. The British model is more consistent with social work values because of its self-determination and client-centeredness characteristics.
