Presidential campaigns and democracy
Article Abstract:
Data from the 2000 National Election Survey in the U.S. indicates that voters who lived in battleground states had greater issue knowledge and issue salience than those who lived in states in which television advertisements were not broadcasted. Results provide evidence supporting the importance of presidential campaigns and advertisements and suggest that Electoral College may have a pernicious effect on representative democracy.
