Prevalence and correlates of heavy smoking in Vietnam veterans with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder
Article Abstract:
Smoking behavior in 445 Vietnam veterans with and without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was studied. Veterans with PTSD had similar occurrence of smoking in contrast to those without PTSD. Smoking veterans with PTSD had a substantially higher rate of heavy smoking. PTSD diagnosis and heavy smoking status were independently and differentially connected to motives for smoking. For veterans with PTSD, heavy smoking status was positively connected to health problems, negative health behavior, total PTSD symptoms, DSM-IV C cluster and D cluster PTSD symptoms.

Smoking withdrawal symptoms in response to a trauma-related stressor among Vietnam combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder
Article Abstract:
Smokers with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibit more smoking withdrawal symptoms when exposed to a trauma-related stressor. Investigation on 25 Vietnam combat veterans indicates that the subjects with PTSD exhibited increased craving, lack of alertness and negative symptoms. Anxiety related stimuli wields more control over the pattern of smoking withdrawal symptoms in subjects afflicted with PTSD than neutral control words.

Cigarette smoking, ambulatory cardiovascular monitoring, and mood in Vietnam veterans with and without chronic posttraumatic stress disorder
Article Abstract:
The study investigated the association among cigarette smoking, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and ambulatory cardiovascular and mood monitoring in 117 male Vietnam combat veterans. Findings suggest that the effect of smoking on cardiovascular parameters may be amplified in smokers in PTSD and that this area deserves more research attention.
