Russia's air war in Chechnya
Article Abstract:
The low intensity Chechen conflict of 1994-95 focused on the combat capability of the Russian Air Force (VVS), following the break-up of the USSR. Despite severe serviceability problems, financial deprivation, limited assets and adverse conditions, the VVS succeeded in providing adequate air support in a predominantly ground offensive. However, the localized war reflected VVS' limited role in the future in Russian defense planning, involving high technology combat. Russia's air power in Chechyna revealed the fund-starved VVS as a regional force element in Russian military strategy.

The Internet's impact on activism: the case of Burma
Article Abstract:
The case of Burma is an example of how the Internet was able to help advance the cause of activists who are not only geographically dispersed but also lack considerable foreign political clout. The pro-democracy movement in Burma, which succeeded in cutting foreign economic support for the existing military junta, operated largely on the Internet and has a very minimal constituency in the US. The triumph of pro-democracy forces in the campaign would not have been possible in an era prior to the advent of the Internet.

Chechnya: a glimpse of future conflict?
Article Abstract:
The war between Chechnya and Russia provided an excellent example of netwar applications in military settings. The conflict shows how a group of clan-based internetted Chechen fighters were able to defeat a bigger, conventional military force through the extremely violent applications of netwar techniques. The Chechens were able to complement their military netwar capabilities by employing such netwar activities as social activism, strategic crime and terror.
