Moral Panics and the Social Construction of Deviant Behavior: a theory and application to the case of ritual child abuse
Article Abstract:
Morality is a concept rooted in a society's most cherished beliefs on what is good and right. As such, any person or any social movement that tauts philosophies inconsistent with the societally defined morals tend to evoke intense alarm among members of the society. The deviants become associated with evil influences. Mass media stories about them become sensationalized and exaggerated. The government responds to these news reports by creating investigative committees, further blowing up the panic engendered by the deviant behavior.

Do women engage in less task behavior than men?
Article Abstract:
Men and women perform the same levels of task behavior in same-gender task group settings. This finding provides supportive evidence for the status characteristics theory, which argues that gender and actual behavior are related to one another. The theory also explains why women engage in less task behavior than men in mixed-gender settings as reported by previous studies. The theory suggests that gender organizes interaction in mixed-gender groups according to the status society confers upon women.
