Social identities and response to treatment for alcohol and cocaine abuse
Article Abstract:
Alcohol and cocaine abusers with positive social identities and greater conflict between identity and substance abuse show greater abstinence after three months of treatment as compared to those with negative identities or less conflict. Positive identities predict abstinence better than the total number of reported identities. Positive identities have a protective and motivational effect for substance abuse abstinence. Individuals who relapse report more identities than those that do not. This indicates that the identities of nonabstainers are less stable than those of abstainers.

The body- the new sacred? The body in hypermodernity
Article Abstract:
Religious and philosophical ideas about the body and its position in the chain of being, compared to the soul, were replaced in the 19th century by practical concerns about the bodies, and especially about the health, of the working class. Postmodern conditions created a situation in which individuality is thought to be maintained by and through the public presentation of the body, and in hypermodernity the 'virtual body' was made possible by the spread of digital technology.
