Issues related to economic developments in several US states regarding public housing and community development are examined, focusing on developments in Rhode Island, Illinois, and Maryland. Topics include $2.3 mil in funds for Rhode Island affordable housing development, $2.6 mil in housing tax credits for seven low-income housing developments in Illinois, and home buyer assistance programs in Maryland.

Issues related to financial and political support for housing and community development in Saginaw, MI, and Charleston, SC, are examined. Topics include the Saginaw Housing Commission's plans to train residents to construct public housing and plans by the Charleston Housing Authority to purchase 400 apartments for affordable housing at a price of between $17 and $20 mil.

Compromising our communities: CDBG at risk
Article Abstract:
The amount of funds offered through the Community Development Block Grants program has not keep up with the rising number of people below the poverty line since 1980. This important funding should be increased so more communities can benefit from the renewal funds it offers.
