Stolypin and the birth of modern counterinsurgency
Article Abstract:
Peter Arkadievich Stolypin was an active figure in counterinsurgency activities during his tenure as Russia's Prime Minister from 1906 until he was assassinated in 19ll. Strolypin had no qualms about implementing summary justice and death penalty to deter the activities of revolutionary activists such as Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin. He was also the foremost advocate of Russia's agrarian reform program, considered as the most successful land reform of all times. Stolypin's counterinsurgency strategies are very similar to the US' anti-communist campaigns in the Philippines, Malaya and Vietnam.

Insurgency and counterinsurgency in Iraq
Article Abstract:
The US is frustrated in its efforts to effectively prosecute the unique blend of political-military operations of insurgencies in the past as well as in its planning and implementation failures that are part of the current involvement in Iraq. Lack of operational coordination and post invasion stability operations following the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime is the main cause for insurgency in Iraq and the US will have to restructure its military forces to create a new government and implement a major aid program to be successful.

The application of military doctrine to counterinsurgency (COIN) operations: a British perspective
Article Abstract:
Classical military doctrine such as the maneuver theory of warfare finds useful application in counterinsurgency (COIN) operations. The doctrine can be successfully deployed to deal with the complexities inherent in a COIN campaign. Britain's expertise in countering insurgency in diverse locales, uses the maneuver approach to destroy the insurgents' moral and physical cohesion through the discreet application of military force. The selective and timely use of force aims to bring about conditions favourable for political dialogue.
