Studying social change: the case of Taiwanese family sociologists
Article Abstract:
Family sociology in Taiwan has focused on the relation between family structure and social change. No theoretical approach predominates, although an underlying functional orientation can be inferred. Quantitative statistical analysis based on survey research is the most common methodological approach. College-level courses on the family are offered in comparable numbers by sociology and non-sociology departments, the number rising dramatically after 1987. Suggestions for the future include collecting longitudinal social data, training more family sociologists and conducting comparative studies of Chinese families in different societies.

Social selves: theories of the social formation of personality
Article Abstract:
A holistic theory of humans as social selves overcomes the false dichotomy between individual and society which originated in the Renaissance. The personality is formed through social relations, and divisions within the self between consciousness and emotions or mind and body reflect social divisions. The theory is developed through examination of the work of George Herbert Mead, the ethnogenic school of Rom Harre, structuralism and poststructuralism, Marxism and Norbert Elias.
