Towards relevant scholarship: family sociology in South Korea
Article Abstract:
Over 700 articles and books on family sociology have been published in South Korea from 1946-1986, with increasing numbers for each decade. Research quality has improved; however, most work is still descriptive rather than theoretical. The 1960s were characterized by a positivistic approach. During the 1970s, research topics and methodologies became more diversified, whereas during the 1980s Marxist and feminist approaches became popular. Changing family structure, family interactional dynamics and male-female exchange of goods and services have been among the most active research topics.
