Tabu: a refugee from Zaire residing in Brazil and seeking citizenship
Article Abstract:
An international seminar entitled 'Acolhimento aos Refugiados' was held at the University of Rio de Janeiro in Nov 1998. One speaker in the seminar was a refugee from Zaire in Brazil named Tabu. Tabu shared her story of survival to a very attentive audience. However, some students in the seminar questioned her wish to become a citizen of Brazil. She responded by telling them how she survived living in a foreign country away from her home and family. A number of refugee stories resemble Tabu's experience and her struggle for citizenship.

Needed: a recommitment to refugee protection
Article Abstract:
The right to seek and enjoy asylum is emphasized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights yet there appears to be a worldwide failure to extend protection to refugees seeking asylum in first world and developing countries. There is a need for governments to protect these refugees and their rights. To this end, it may be necessary to form regional and international alliances to promote just policies. Commitment among nations to causes that promote human rights is a fitting tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.
